Cigna in the headlines: 7 recent updates

The Cigna Group named a new leader for its Medicare business and settled several legal actions in recent weeks. 

Here are seven updates Becker's has reported about the Bloomfield, Conn.-based payer since June 20. 

  1. An AI recruiting system helped Cigna fill 65 percent of its open roles with internal candidates. 

  1. Cigna received final approval from a federal court in Connecticut on a $300,000 class settlement with plaintiffs who alleged the company violated its fiduciary duties under the ERISA by overcharging for laboratory services from certain providers.The final agreement is expected to provide compensation to 5,000 people who were a part of the class action and resolves some claims made by class members under the original complaint filed in 2017.

  1. The Cigna Group's network of behavioral health providers grew by more than 30 percent in 2022, according to the company's "2022 Environmental, Social, and Governance Report."

  1. Cigna is adding three Humira biosimilars to its formulary beginning Sept. 1. Other payers have made similar moves to add the less expensive alternatives to the high-priced immunotherapy. Optum Rx said it would add two more Humira biosimilars to its formulary July 1.

  1. A federal judge in Connecticut denied a class-action bid against Cigna for allegedly overcharging members for medical equipment and violating its fiduciary duties under the ERISA.

  1. Chris DeRosa, president of U.S. government business for the Cigna Group, will take over operations of the company's Medicare and individual and family business lines. Senior adviser Chuck Berg, who led the division and joined the company in January 2022, is departing. 

  1. CVS Health and former Cigna executive Amy Bricker are appealing a federal judge's decision to grant a preliminary injunction barring her from working for CVS while a lawsuit over her noncompete clause moves forward.
