Cigna in the headlines: 7 recent updates

Cigna is delaying a prior authorization policy and pursuing legal action to keep one of its former executives from joining CVS Health.

Here are seven updates about the Cigna Group Becker's has reported since May 23.

  1. A Cigna Healthcare study found administering pegfilgrastim, an injection used to prevent infection in cancer patients, in a home setting increased patient outcomes compared to administration in a nonhome setting.

  2. Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network could go out of network with Cigna July 1 if the two are unable to reach a new contract.

  3. A federal judge in St. Louis issued a preliminary injunction barring former Cigna executive Amy Bricker from working for CVS Health while a lawsuit over her noncompete clause moves forward.

  4. In-home healthcare company Monogram Health named former Cigna leader Casey McKeon COO. Mr. McKeon most recently served as general manager of strategy and operations for Cigna's government business segment.

  5. Eight Florida hospitals can pursue a lawsuit against Cigna after a federal appeals court on May 25 overturned a lower court's ruling in favor of the payer. The hospitals filed a lawsuit against Cigna in 2020 alleging that Cigna paid less than the community rate for care provided to the insurer's members, according to court records.

  6. Cigna added 1.4 million new commercial members in the first quarter of 2023.

  7. The Cigna Group is again delaying implementation of a policy that would have required the submission of medical records when using modifier 25 for all evaluation and management claims billed with CPT codes 99212-99215 and a minor procedure.
