Cigna in the headlines: 6 recent updates

Cigna has struck several new contracts with health systems in recent weeks. Here are six updates about the Bloomfield, Conn.-based payer Becker's has covered since Dec. 12.

  1. Cigna of Ohio and Cincinnati-based Mercy Health reached an agreement to keep over 12,000 patients in network. The agreement came days after Mercy Health's existing agreement with Cigna expired Jan. 1.

  2. Wells Fargo analysts downgraded Cigna from "overweight" to "equal weight" rating, favoring the payer's competitors.

  3. Medicare Advantage plan Cigna HealthSpring of Tennessee received $5.9 million in overpayments from the federal government in 2016 and 2017, according to an HHS Inspector General's Office audit. Cigna did not concur with OIG's recommendations or findings and disputes OIG's audit methodology.

  4. Cigna and Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica finalized an agreement to keep the health system's patients in network with the payer. The sides reached a verbal agreement Dec. 21.

  5. Cigna and Titusville, Fla.-based Parrish Healthcare reached a new multiyear contract that will keep the payer's members in network with Parrish Medical Center and Parrish Medical Group physicians. The health system had previously said it would be severing its ties with Cigna on Dec. 16, citing overall financial losses and claiming the health insurer refused to pay $1.3 million in reimbursements for additional services.

  6. Clovis, Calif.-based Community Health System is out of network with several major payers, including Cigna. The health system did not reach an agreement with Cigna, UnitedHealthcare or Anthem before a Dec. 31 deadline.
