Cigna develops vitality index to measure overall health

Cigna unveiled a new "vitality index" designed to measure multiple areas of population mental and physical health.

The payer surveyed 10,000 American adults on a wide variety of measures of physical and mental well-being to get a baseline measure of vitality levels.

The findings, released Oct. 26, show most U.S. adults — 67 percent — fall into the "medium" vitality category.

Gen Z adults were more likely to have low vitality scores than their older counterparts, and younger men were more likely to have higher scores than younger women. This gender gap narrowed in older groups.

According to the report, vitality levels are linked to higher motivation and productivity at work.

"The past few years clearly illustrated that health is multidimensional and we need a more comprehensive measurement approach — one that can assess how we are showing up at work, at home and in our communities," Cigna CEO David Cordani said in the news release.
