Cigna begins covering special baby formula after Arizona family complains

Amid an ongoing nationwide baby formula shortage, a Phoenix family says Cigna had denied coverage for their children's special prescription formula, according to KPHO.

Brayden Perry is 8 years old and his sister Sydney is 5. They both rely on prescription formula because of a pediatric feeding disorder.

"We have counted up exactly how many days we have, and it's nerve-wracking to know at some point we could run out of the formula that we need for our kids," mother Kyra Perry told KPHO.

The family said their health coverage recently changed and they've struggled to have their new provider, Cigna, cover the prescription formula and g-tube supplies. The current shortage means suppliers are not accepting new customers. The Perry family has relied on donations from other families, which includes expired products.

"That's gotten us through," Ms. Perry told KPHO. "Otherwise, we wouldn't have enough formula to feed our kids."

KPHO contacted Cigna and said a case manager was assigned to work with the family "almost immediately." The family's plan will now cover the special formula, and Cigna is working with a distributor to supply the family.

"We want our customers to be able to focus on what matters most: Their health and their family, which is why we worked quickly to resolve this issue," a Cigna spokesperson told KPHO.
