Centene posts $3.3B profit in 2024

Centene lost nearly 1.5 million Medicaid members in 2024, but posted 12% enrollment growth in its marketplace segment, according to the company’s fourth quarter earnings report published Feb. 4

Total revenues in the fourth quarter were $40.8 billion, up 3.4% year over year. Total revenues in 2024 were $163 billion, up 5.9%.

In the fourth quarter, net income was $283 million, compared to $45 million during the same period in 2023. Year-end net income was $3.3 billion, up 22.3% year over year. 

The company’s medical loss ratio was 89.6% in the fourth quarter, compared to 89.5% during the same period last year. In 2024, the company’s MLR was 88.3%.

As of Dec. 31, Centene had 28.6 million total medical members, up 4% year over year. There are 13 million Medicaid members, 4.8 million commercial (including 4.4 million marketplace), and a combined 1.1 million Medicare Advantage and supplement plans.

Centene increased its 2025 premium and revenues guidance by $2.5 billion to a range of $158 billion to $160 billion, reflecting strong Medicare Advantage and PDP enrollment, along with Medicaid contract changes. The company’s 2025 adjusted earnings per share guidance is at least $7.25.
