CareFirst awards $575k to social equity needs in Baltimore

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield awarded $575,000 to five nonprofit health organizations in West Baltimore to support continued service to the community, reports Boston Business Journal.

Nonprofits include Catholic Charities of Baltimore, Health Care for the Homeless, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, PennNorthRecoveryCenter and the University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation.

Julie Wagner, vice president for community affairs at CareFirst, said financially supporting organizations that emphasize healthy living and wellness is a priority for the health insurer.

“We think that as a nonprofit health insurer we have a role to play,” Ms. Wagner told Baltimore Business Journal. “Each of these grants [is] a little different and touch different parts of the community.”
