Capping cost-sharing monthly, rather than yearly, could save patients money

Capping cost-sharing each month, rather than on an annual basis, could result in savings for consumers, a new research brief published in JAMA Network Open found.

The study, authored by researchers from Boston University, Atlanta-based Emory University and Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University, examined how patient and plan costs would change under a hypothetical monthly $250 and $500 cost-sharing limit.

The researchers found instituting a $500 monthly limit resulted in a median 45.5 percent cost decrease for those whose monthly costs exceeded the cap. These savings were higher for individuals with high-deductible plans.
