Canopy Health partnership with Providence aims to take on Kaiser Permanente

Emeryville, Calif.-based medical group Canopy Health is adding four Providence hospitals in Sonoma County to its network in an effort to compete with Kaiser Permanente, The Press Democrat reported July 16.

Canopy was founded in 2015 by University of California San Francisco Health and John Muir Health in Walnut Creek. Providence is a Renton, Wash.-based provider with 52 hospitals across seven states.

Pending regulatory approval, Canopy's 50,000 members will be able to access nearly 500 additional providers and care at Providence hospitals in Santa Rosa, Napa, Petaluma and Healdsburg.

CEO Mike Robinson told The Press Democrat the expansion aims to provide an affordable alternative to Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente. Kaiser told the newspaper in a statement it has created a "unique integrated care experience" over the last 70 years, with 40 of those in Sonoma County.

Though Providence will manage the four hospitals within Canopy's network, Providence Medical Group and its physicians will operate outpatient clinics.
