Blue Shield of California launches maternal health initiative, targets underserved mothers

Blue Shield of California is collaborating with community partners to launch a new health equity initiative targeting mothers.

The Maternal Child Health Equity initiative aims to address higher maternal mortality rates among mothers from underserved communities, the company announced Feb. 9.

The payer is collaborating with community-based organizations to train doulas and connect mothers in need to family services and maternal supplies. It is also working with maternal medical record platform Mahmee to provide mothers with record tracking and educational resources.

"At Blue Shield of California, we're taking a holistic approach to improving the health outcomes for mothers and their babies," said Susan Fleischman, MD, Blue Shield of California CMO. "We believe this kind of effort is required to make health equity a reality for these moms and their newborns. This is part of Blue Shield's vision for reimagining health as we seek to make the healthcare system that’s worthy of our family and friends and sustainably affordable for everyone."
