Big payers ranked by Medicare Advantage growth in 1st half of 2022

Medicare Advantage enrollment has grown for nearly every major payer in the first half of this year, with continued expansions planned for 2023:

CVS Health/Aetna — 8.2 percent increase
June 30, 2022: 3.22 million members
Dec. 31, 2021: 2.97 million members

UnitedHealthcare — 7 percent increase
June 30, 2022: 6.95 million members
Dec. 31, 2021: 6.49 million members

Elevance Health — 4.7 percent increase
June 30, 2022: 1.95 million members
Dec. 31, 2021: 1.86 million members

Humana — 3 percent increase
June 30, 2022: 5.12 million members
Dec. 31, 2021: 4.97 million members

Cigna — 4.1 percent decrease
June 30, 2022: 544,000 members
Dec. 31, 2021: 567,000 members

Centene has only reported overall Medicare growth this year and did not separate Medicare Advantage growth, though the company said it had 1.1 million total MA members in 2021. In 2022, the company expanded its MA brand, WellCare, into a total of 36 states and 1,575 counties.
