‘Big 6’ payer membership by the numbers

Anthem topped the list of payers by total membership, while Aetna saw the smallest growth in 2021.

Here are the largest six payers ranked by their 2021 membership:

1. Anthem: 45.4 million members (up 5.7 percent year over year)

2. UnitedHealthcare: 45.1 million members (up 5 percent year over year)

3. Centene: 26.6 million members (up 4.3 percent year over year)

4. Aetna: 23.8 million members (up 0.4 percent year over year)

5. Cigna: 17.1 million members (up 2.6 percent year over year)

6. Humana: 9.8 million members (up 3.1 percent year over year)
