Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is targeting members’ out-of-pocket prescription drug costs under a new initiative called Rx Savings Solutions.

The program, available to most BCBSNC members, identifies lower-cost but equally effective drug options through examining claims data. Members receive emails or text messages when potential drug savings are identified for them. Members are also notified if it would be cheaper to fill their prescription at a different pharmacy.

With the help of their physician, members can switch to a generic substitute, therapeutic equivalent or different dosage to partake in savings. BCBSNC said members will see $153 in savings per fill on average.
