BCBS of Massachusetts funds $16.5M in health equity grants

Twelve Massachusetts health systems are receiving Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts-funded grants for projects to improve equity of care and race, ethnicity and language data collection practices.

The $16.5 million in grants was awarded by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, according to a Sept. 27 BCBS Massachusetts news release. Projects funded include efforts to reduce disparities in hypertension and diabetes care, accelerate equity in cancer screening and expand implicit bias training for staff.

The facilities receiving grants include Boston Children's Boston, Boston Medical Center, Cambridge-based Beth Israel Lahey Health and Boston-based Mass General Brigham.

The awardees' proposals were scored based on their focus on reducing inequities in clinical care, feasibility, sustainability, and effect on equity and anti-racism.
