EHR technologies need to include electronic prior authorization to be certified by HHS' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, AHIP says.
The office issued a proposed rule April 11 updating criteria EHRs must meet to be certified by the government.
In a statement published April 12, AHIP President and CEO Matt Eyles said these rules neglected to include standards for electronic prior authorization.
CMS has proposed requiring government-sponsored health plans to improve electronic prior authorization by 2026.
EHRs should have to follow a similar timeline, Mr. Eyles said.
"Health insurance providers are committed to using technology to streamline and improve evidence-based medical management programs and processes, such as prior authorization," Mr. Eyles said. "[Certified EHR technology] vendors and healthcare providers must share in these responsibilities for there to be any benefit for the patients they serve."
