The possibility of a state-based health insurance exchange in Mississippi is looking less probable, state Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney told Mississippi Today in a March 10 report.
“It might be too little, too late, because the dollars are not there that would have been there before,” Mr. Chaney said, referencing the enhanced subsidies that expired at the start of 2026. “The subsidies are gone.”
A now defunct Mississippi House bill introduced in the 2026 legislative session would have required a state-based exchange. However, the commissioner said “it’s much to do about nothing,” adding he would not be interested in establishing a state-based marketplace unless the governor approved.
As of Jan. 15, Mississippi showed a 7% dip in year-over-year ACA enrollment, following a national trend of enrollment declines.
In February, CMS proposed an ACA overhaul for 2027, with some policies affecting the launch and operation of state-based exchanges.
