Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, said his party is preparing to make its “best and final offer” to extend the ACA enhanced tax credits, Politico reported Jan. 28.
Mr. Moreno has been a lead negotiator in a bipartisan effort in the Senate to extend the subsidies that expired at the end of 2025. He said he is handing a proposal to Democrats that is “the exact thing that we think is the maximum we can sell our conference,” according to the report.
The talks have revolved around a possible two-year extension of the subsidies, according to Politico. Discussions have also included new restrictions, such as an income limit, as well an expanded use of health savings accounts that would take effect in the second year.
Sen. Angus King, a Maine independent who caucuses with the Democrats, said he is hopeful the bill will move once a legislative package to fund the federal government through fiscal 2026 is approved.
