Enrollment in the marketplace has increased by 11.6 million, nearly doubling from 2021, when the marketplace had just 12 million enrollees. The new data includes 3.2 million new consumers this year, pushing the total number of signups to a historic high, according to a Jan. 8 CMS news release.
While the start of 2025’s enrollment season was slow, a surge in activity has since propelled numbers ahead of expectations. By mid-December, 16.6 million people had enrolled, with 2 million new consumers signing up in just two weeks.
Enrollment continued to gain momentum throughout December and with the Jan. 15 deadline approaching, more are expected to sign up for coverage starting Feb. 1.
The expansion of premium tax credits, first introduced by the Biden administration in 2021, continues to play a major role in increasing enrollment. Nearly 80% of Healthcare.gov consumers can access coverage for $10 or less per month.
The surge in ACA signups follows 2024’s then-record 21.5 million enrollees, the highest since the marketplace’s inception in 2014.
