An estimated 418,000 Americans now have expanded access to postpartum coverage, according to an Oct. 27 CMS news release.

The extension of coverage was made possible by a provision in the American Rescue Plan, which granted states the ability to extend postpartum Medicaid and CHIP coverage from the mandatory 60 days to a full year, the release said.

About 720,000 people across the country would be guaranteed postpartum Medicaid coverage if all states chose to extend benefits for 12 months, according to the release.
