95% of Americans satisfied with their supplemental coverage plan, AHIP survey finds

The vast majority of Americans are satisfied with their supplemental health insurance plans that help pay for critical medical expenses, according to a survey released March 24 by America's Health Insurance Plans.

The survey included responses from 500 supplemental insurance policyholders who received benefits in the last 10 years. The survey was conducted from Jan. 27 to Feb. 7, 2022.

Four takeaways:

  • Supplemental insurance enrollees are very satisfied with their plans:
    • Accident insurance: 99 percent 
    • Critical illness insurance: 97 percent 
    • Hospital and physician/fixed indemnity insurance: 92 percent 
  • Enrollees are very satisfied with the service they receive from payers:
    • The ability to quickly receive benefits from supplemental insurance: 94 percent 
    • The process to enroll in and renew supplemental insurance: 93 percent
    • The process of filing a claim with supplemental payers: 91 percent
    • The knowledge of the supplemental insurance agents: 91 percent
    • The ability to contact providers with questions or feedback: 90 percent
    • The communications received from supplemental payers: 90 percent
  • Supplemental insurance plans are viewed as something to rely on: 
    • My plan gives peace of mind: 91 percent 
    • My plan was there when I needed it: 90 percent
    • My plan allows me to receive high quality care: 90 percent
    • My plan's benefits are simple and straightforward to use: 89 percent
    • My plan helped me get through a difficult time: 85 percent
  • Having supplemental insurance prevented policyholders from experiencing financial hardships:
    • My plan helped pay for critical medical expenses I needed by easing the cost of deductibles and copays: 90 percent
    • My plan eases my concerns about preserving my family's financial security: 90 percent
    • My plan was a valuable investment that protected me financially: 89 percent
    • My plan helped me pay for essential nonmedical expenses like housing, food, childcare and transportation: 74 percent
    • My plan helped me pay for expenses related to COVID-19, including testing and treatment: 73 percent
