9.2% of Americans were uninsured in 2021: 7 things to know

The U.S. had a 9.2 percent uninsured rate last year, a decrease from 9.7 percent in 2020, according to a May 5 report from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. 

Seven things to know:

1. Adults ages 18-64 are the most likely group to be uninsured. In 2021, 13.5 percent of that age group was uninsured. That's down from 13.9 percent in 2020 and 14.7 percent in 2019. 

2. In 2021, 39.5 percent of people of all ages had public health coverage and 60.4 percent had private insurance. 

3. Nearly one-fourth (24.5 percent) of uninsured adults ages 18-64 made less than 100 percent of the federal poverty level, while 23.7 percent made between 100 and 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

4. Private health coverage was down in 2021 from 67.5 percent in 2020, while public insurance was up from 20.5 percent. 

5. The uninsured rate among children ages 0-17 was 4.1 percent in 2021, down from 5.1 percent each of the previous two years. 

6. In 2021, 44.3 percent of children had public health insurance and 53.8 percent had private insurance. 

7. Hispanic adults ages 18-64 were the most likely group to be uninsured, with a 30.1 rate in 2021. That figure is up from 29.3 percent in 2021.
