80% of privately insured adults rate their coverage positively: 10 things to know

Four in 5 adults with employer-sponsored insurance rated their coverage positively, but many also reported having problems with their insurance in the past 12 months, according to a survey from KFF.

The survey, published June 15, interviewed 3,605 adults with employer-sponsored insurance, marketplace coverage, Medicare and Medicaid.

Here are 10 findings from the survey to note:

  1. Adults who rated their health status as fair or poor were more likely to rate their insurance coverage negatively. Among all types of coverage, 81 percent of people who rated their health as good rated their insurance as excellent or good, compared to 68 percent of those who rated their health as fair or bad.

  2. Three out of 5 people with employer-sponsored coverage said they had a problem with their coverage in the past year, the highest of any coverage type.

  3. The most common problem people with employer-sponsored coverage reported in the past year was that their insurance paid less than they expected for a bill.

  4. Medicare members were less likely to report having a problem with their coverage in the past year, with 51 percent reporting an issue.

  5. Of those who reported a problem with their insurance, 17 percent said the issue caused a significant delay in receiving medical care or treatment.

  6. Among those who reported a problem with their insurance, 50 percent said it was resolved, and 28 percent said the issue was resolved but not in the way they would have liked.

  7. Around half of those with any form of coverage said some aspect of their health insurance was hard to understand. Marketplace enrollees were most likely to say something was confusing, with 63 percent reporting some aspect of their coverage was somewhat or very difficult to understand.

  8. Four in 10 people who reported having fair or poor mental health said they did not receive needed mental healthcare in the past year. Those with employer-sponsored coverage were most likely to report not receiving care.

  9. Four in 10 survey respondents rated their out-of-pocket costs as "fair or poor," with marketplace recipients most likely to report dissatisfaction with out-of-pocket rates.

  10. Four in 10 of the survey respondents said they had delayed some type of healthcare due to cost in the past 12 months.
