6 recent payer lawsuits, settlements

From UnitedHealth Group facing a proposed class-action suit over Medicare Advantage care denials, to Elevance settling with a former executive who left for a similar role at Molina, here are six lawsuits and settlements involving payers that Becker’s has reported since Oct. 28:

1. UnitedHealth Group and its health insurance arm, UnitedHealthcare, are facing a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging an AI algorithm wrongfully denied Medicare Advantage patients care. 

2. The Justice Department is asking a Texas federal court to dismiss its case against SCA Health that alleged the company agreed with competitors not to poach senior-level employees. SCA is part of UnitedHealth Group’s Optum division.   

3. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association allowed federal employees’ sensitive medical information to be obtained by third-party technology companies, including TikTok, a federal lawsuit alleges. 

4. Elevance Health reached a settlement with a former executive who left the company for a similar role at Molina Healthcare. 

5. UnitedHealth Group and Optum violated state and federal employee notification laws during mass layoffs that occurred earlier this year, two former employees allege in a lawsuit filed in California federal court.  

6. A federal judge upheld a $2.7 billion settlement agreement resolving allegations Blue Cross Blue Shield Association members engaged in anti-competitive actions to drive up costs.
