5 states with the highest, lowest deductibles in 2016

Between 2015 and 2016, 14 states witnessed statistically significant increases in average deductibles for individual coverage under employer health plans, according to SHADAC, a health policy research center affiliated with Minneapolis-based University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

The report, titled “State-Level Trends in Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance, 2012–2016,” analyzed Medical Expenditure Panel Survey-Insurance Component weighted estimates. MEPS-IC estimates use the Census Bureau’s Business Register in its weighting process.

Here are five states with the highest average annual deductible in 2016.

1. New Hampshire — $2,434
2. Tennessee — $2,142
3. Maine — $2,103
4. Montana — $2,039
5. Missouri — $2,009

Here are five states, including the District of Columbia, with the lowest average annual deductible in 2016.

1. Hawaii — $988
2. District of Columbia — $1,181
3. Alabama — $1,205
4. New Mexico — $1,301
5. Michigan — $1,379
