3 more states, Washington, D.C., expand postpartum Medicaid coverage

CMS approved Maine, Minnesota, New Mexico and Washington D.C.’s proposals to expand Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program postpartum coverage from 60 days to 12 months.

The states join 11 others that previously expanded their coverage to 12 months, according to a June 16 HHS news release. The expanded coverage option began April 1 as part of the American Rescue Plan. 

California, Florida, Kentucky, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Michigan, Louisiana, Virginia, New Jersey and Illinois previously expanded coverage. 

Nine other states have submitted extension proposals to CMS: Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Washington and West Virginia.
