2 more former NFL stars plead guilty to defrauding health plan

Former NFL athletes Chadwick Slaughter and Fabian Washington have pleaded guilty for their part in a scheme to defraud the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan, according to the Texas Department of Insurance.

Mr. Slaughter took nearly $34,000 and Mr. Washington took nearly $120,000 by submitting false medical claims to the HRA plan, according to a May 13 news release.

TDI prosecutor Rick Watson said the department has identified eight former NFL players in Harris County, Texas, who have connections with the scheme, along with a Houston athletic trainer.

"The players would submit false claims to the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan for medical treatments that were never actually performed," Mr. Watson said. "When the plan reimbursed for those expenses, they would give a portion to the trainer."

Mr. Slaughter was an offensive tackle for the Oakland Raiders. Mr. Washington was a cornerback who also spent time with the Raiders and the Baltimore Ravens.

Both men pleaded guilty to third-degree felonies and must repay the money that was taken. They will each serve five years' probation.

All eight former players and the athletic trainer were first indicted in September 2020 by the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
