UnitedHealth subsidiary's ASC deal facing scrutiny from Connecticut regulators

Connecticut hospital regulators want more information from UnitedHealth subsidiary SCA Health over its attempts to acquire controlling interest in a surgical center in the state, CT Insider reported Nov. 21.

Guilford (Conn.) Surgical Center, which is owned by a group of 23 physicians, sold a 49 percent ownership stake to Deerfield, Ill.-based SCA Health in November 2022, according to the report. SCA is now seeking to acquire an additional 9 percent stake.

The Connecticut Office of Health Strategy is asking SCA for details on how its proposed majority ownership stake "will have a positive impact on care," according to the report. The regulators are also inquiring about the company's plans for attracting an "increasing number of more complex procedures as these cases migrate from the more expensive hospital environment to the lower-cost ASC setting."

SCA has until Dec. 1 to respond to the letter, according to the report. The office is considering the company's application incomplete until the requested information is received.
