3 Optum M&A updates

Optum could soon purchase Steward's physician group, a clinic chain in Oregon and home health provider Amedisys.

Three updates on where the deals currently stand:

  • Steward Health Care said in March it plans to sell its physician group to Optum as part of the Dallas-based health system's plan to shore up its finances amid ongoing challenges. If approved, physicians who work at Steward facilities across nine states would be employed by Optum.

  • Corvallis Clinic was approved by Oregon state regulators on March 13 to be purchased by Optum over an immediate need to maintain financial solvency. Corvallis Clinic includes 11 clinics, an ASC and more than 110 providers.

  • Amedisys has been involved with a potential $3.3 billion sale to Optum since June 2023. The proposed deal is facing an antitrust review from the Justice Department, and Oregon regulators said in March that they would open a review into the proposed deal after a preliminary report found it could hurt competition in the state. The Baton Rouge, La.-based company provides home health, hospice and high-acuity care services. The company employs 18,000 people across 522 care centers in 37 states and the District of Columbia.
