3 Blues plans becoming providers

As the nation's largest insurers have evolved, several Blue Cross Blue Shield companies are following suit and becoming providers as well.

BCBS plans spent 2023 reorganizing to better compete with larger insurers through corporate restructuring, M&A or the launch of healthcare delivery subsidiaries.

Three recent Blues moves in the provider space:

Florida Blue opened a primary care center in January for Medicare beneficiaries and members over 50. The Jacksonville-based clinic will be operated by Sanitas, which Florida Blue has partnered with since 2015. Florida Blue opened four primary care clinics with Sanitas in 2023. The new clinic will provide primary and preventive care, pharmacy services, mental healthcare, chronic care management and space for wellness classes and activities, according to the release.

BCBS North Carolina purchased all 55 North Carolina locations of FastMed in January, a national chain of urgent care clinics. FastMed offers preventive, telehealth, occupational health, primary and urgent care services at clinics across North Carolina, Arizona, Texas and Florida.

BCBS Arizona launched a new primary care company, Prosano Health Solutions, in 2023. The subsidiary has opened its first facility in Maricopa County, with three more locations opening in 2024. Prosano launched for BCBS Arizona employees first, with 1,800 employees and their dependents enrolling. A new health plan, the BlueSignature Prosano PPO plan, is being offered to employer groups in 2024 and provides access to the Prosano care centers. The new care centers offer access to a primary care team, behavioral health practitioners, lab services, same-day appointments, virtual options, and a selection of the most needed prescriptions. An expansion to Tucson is planned for 2025.
