2 health systems buy ownership stake in West Virginia payer

Two Huntington, W.Va.-based health systems, Marshall Health and Mountain Health Network, have become co-owners of West Virginia University Health System-founded payer Peak Health.

The provider announced in September 2021 that it was launching Peak Health to initially cover its 30,000 employees before broadening through West Virginia to serve commercial and government customers. The insurer is slated to launch in 2023.

"Marshall Health, Mountain Health and WVU Medicine share the common vision of creating a healthier West Virginia," said Ben Gerber, president of Peak Health in a Feb. 14 announcement. "Peak Health really is about empowering people to reach new heights with their health, and they will be able to do so through the community based, provider-led model of care we are building. We are excited for other health systems to collaborate with us as well."
