BCBS Rhode Island reports $10M operating loss in 2025

BCBS Rhode Island posted a $10 million operating loss in 2025, the insurer shared March 12. The company had a normalized operating loss of $78 million, a -3.2% margin, up from $115 million in 2024, where it recorded a -5.2% margin.

In 2025, BCBS Rhode Island documented nearly $2.43 billion in member premiums. The company allocated 90.4% of premium revenue to paying claims, and 10.8%, including premium taxes, went toward core business operations. Total expenses reached $2.44 billion, resulting in the operating loss.

However, with its $24 million in investment income, the company wrapped 2025 with a $14 million net gain. 

By the end of 2025, statutory reserves stood at $362 million, up $25 million from 2024.
