UnitedHealth Group has named Wayne DeVeydt as its new chief financial officer, effective Sept. 2.
John Rex, who has been CFO since 2016, will become strategic advisor to CEO Stephen Hemsley on the same date.
Mr. DeVeydt was most recently a managing director and operating partner at Bain Capital. From 2018 to 2020, he was chairman and CEO of Surgery Partners, and he served as Anthem’s CFO from 2007 to 2016.
“There is no organization besides UnitedHealth Group that presents the kinds of opportunities to make a difference in health care, from individual patient care to broad system efficiency, so I am eagerly looking forward to joining the team,” he said in a July 31 news release. “I’ve been fortunate to know John Rex for over two decades and am honored to follow a leader of his caliber.”
Mr. Rex first joined the company in 2012 as CFO of Optum.
UnitedHealth has made several leadership changes since May as part of a broader company-wide recalibration aimed at addressing rising cost pressures.
Mr. Hemsley replaced former CEO Andrew Witty, who stepped down in May after serving as the company’s CEO since 2021. Patrick Conway, MD, was named CEO of Optum in June, and UnitedHealthcare named four new CEOs to lead different units of the company in July.
