Dan Kueter, CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s commercial business since 2022, has moved into a new role as chief commercial officer of UnitedHealth Group. Brandon Cuevas, who left UnitedHealthcare for Kaiser Permanente in 2023, has returned to take over the commercial business.
Both executives announced the moves in LinkedIn posts Sept. 22.
In his new role, Mr. Kueter said he will work with UnitedHealth’s senior leadership team to coordinate product development and innovation across the company, including in AI and emerging technologies. He also said he plans to engage with the company’s innovation, technology and investment strategic partners, and will work with colleagues at Optum and UnitedHealthcare “to help drive our next chapter of growth and innovation.”
Mr. Kueter first joined UnitedHealth in 2001 at Ingenix and later was CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s Iowa and central Illinois market. He left the company in 2012 to lead the University of Iowa Health Alliance and later Midwest Health Collaborative, an alliance of six Ohio health systems, before returning to UnitedHealthcare in 2018 as senior vice president of UnitedHealth Network. He served as CFO of the commercial business before being named CEO in July 2022.
Mr. Cuevas spent about three years at Kaiser, most recently as executive vice president of national health plan. Before joining Kaiser, he spent more than a decade at UnitedHealthcare, serving as chief growth officer for the insurer’s commercial business and as CEO of its California market.
“I’ve spent more than a decade of my career at UHC and returning to the company in this next chapter feels a bit like coming home,” Mr. Cuevas wrote.
