Independence Health Group CEO to retire

Independence Health Group CEO Gregory Deavens plans to retire at the end of 2025.

Mr. Deavens was appointed CEO of Independence Health Group, the parent company of Independence Blue Cross, in 2021, according to a Dec. 29 news release. Before becoming CEO, he joined Independence as CFO in 2017. 

Philadelphia-based Independence Health Group also operates AmeriHealth Caritas through a partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The company operates in 13 states and Washington, D.C. Mr. Deavens will remain chair of AmeriHealth Caritas’s board of directors through the end of the year. 

The company will convene a national search for Mr. Deavens’s successor, according to the release. 

Independence Health Group also promoted Rich Snyder, MD, to chief operating officer. Dr. Snyder was most recently executive vice president of health services at Independence. He will assist with the leadership transition, according to the news release. 

Independence Health Group and its affiliates have more than 8 million members as of 2023.
