Centene has hired Steven Kelts for the role of AI ethicist, he announced in a September LinkedIn post.
In the new role, Mr. Kelts said he is implementing ethical decision-making frameworks across the insurer’s workforce of more than 60,000 employees and is working with a team to build AI governance standards.
“AI will spark a revolution in healthcare outcomes, management and efficiency, but to benefit the most vulnerable in our communities it has to be ethical and unbiased,” he wrote.
Mr. Kelts spent nearly more than a decade as a lecturer at Princeton University, where he taught tech ethics and policy and established a program integrating ethics into computer science classrooms. He previously held faculty roles at George Washington University, Northwestern University and Stanford University, and has consulted for companies on AI ethics, governance and curriculum design. He also recently joined Georgetown University’s AI and Democratic Citizenship research group.
