7 recent payer executive moves

From sudden C-Suite-level shifts at Bright HealthCare to Magellan Healthcare naming its behavioral health lead, here are seven recent payer executive moves:

1. Simeon Schindelman, Bright HealthCare's CEO, is stepping down from his role effective March 11. Mr. Schindelman will be succeeded by Jay Matushak, the payer's current CFO, until the payer can find a permanent replacement. 

2. Corey Ewing was named CEO of WellCare of Kentucky, a Centene subsidiary, effective Feb. 14. Mr. Ewing joins WellCare of Kentucky after serving as COO of Managed Health Services, Centene's Indiana health plan.

3. Jonathan Gavras, MD, former Florida Blue CMO and Bright HealthCare Florida president, joined home-based care company CareCentrix as its senior strategic clinical advisor. In addition to Florida Blue and Bright HealthCare, Dr. Gavras has held leadership positions at Prime Therapeutics, Avalon Health and UnitedHealthcare.

4. Caroline Carney, MD, joined Magellan Healthcare as its president of behavioral health. Dr. Carney formerly served Magellan Healthcare as senior vice president and CMO.

5. Blue Shield of California named Pamela DeCoste to its board of directors. Ms. DeCoste has a 40-year tenure in finance, spending most of it with multinational healthcare company Koninklijke Philips.

6. Charles Berg joined Cigna as its president of U.S. government business and senior advisor, effective Jan. 31. Mr. Berg is a former DaVita Medical Group and WellCare Health Plans executive chair, and served as CEO of Oxford Health Plans until it was acquired by UnitedHealth Group. He then served as a UnitedHealth Group executive. 

7. Intermountain Healthcare-affiliated payer SelectHealth named Ed Castledine its Idaho market president. Mr. Castledine enters the position after serving as CEO of Nampa, Idaho-based provider Saltzer Health, an Intermountain subsidiary.
