New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System could go out of network with UnitedHealthcare on Jan. 1 if the two sides are unable to reach a new contract.

The potential split would affect Mount Sinai patients with UnitedHealthcare employer-sponsored and individual plans, including the Oxford Health Plan, according to UnitedHealthcare’s website.

UnitedHealthcare accused Mount Sinai of unrealistic proposals that would “significantly drive up premiums and out-of-pocket costs for consumers as well as the cost of doing business for employers.”

A Mount Sinai spokesperson told Gothamist Dec. 27 that the health system has been working in good faith with UnitedHealthcare to “establish a new, fair agreement that will put patients first and protect patients’ ability to choose Mount Sinai for care and we hope to reach a new agreement before the end of 2023.”

At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 2–3 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
