The split affects all Anthem commercial and ACA plans. Scripps’ largest medical groups stopped accepting all Medicare Advantage plans, including Anthem, in 2024.
The move impacts up to 125,000 people with Anthem insurance, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Anthem, owned by Elevance Health, is the second-largest insurer in California, with over 5 million members, trailing only Kaiser Permanente.
“Please know this is not the outcome we wanted,” San Diego-based Scripps wrote on its website. “We did everything we could to avoid this situation while advocating strongly for our Anthem patients’ and the community’s best interests.”
“We want Scripps doctors and facilities to return to our network and remain in discussions to reach an agreement that offers affordable prices for the employers and consumers we serve — but we cannot agree to the extreme price increases Scripps seeks to charge patients covered by Anthem,” the insurer wrote on its website. More than 80% of Anthem’s members are insured by self-funded employers.
Scripps and Anthem both said negotiations will continue. Scripps still participates in Blue Shield of California’s network, which is a separate company from Elevance and Anthem Blue Cross.
