North Carolina’s state health plan cancelled a previous request for proposal seeking third-party administrator services and will soon issue a new one, according to an April 15 news release from State Treasurer Bradford Briner.
The release said the cancellation of the March 20 RFP stems from a lack of bids meeting minimum criteria. The plan will continue its silent period as a new RFP is set to roll out in the coming weeks. The team is aiming for the plan’s board of trustees to approve a contract in the summer. The next contract would begin Jan. 1, 2028.
The current contract with Aetna runs through 2027 and will not be extended. The News & Observer reported projected state health plan overspending during the contract, and the treasurer’s office previously told Becker’s “the administration has different priorities and would prefer a contract that is more in line with those priorities.”
