Maine provider joins others in dropping Anthem

Scarborough-based Coastal Women's Healthcare has joined two other Maine providers in dropping Anthem insurance plans, CBS affiliate WGME reported May 25.

Anthem will be out of network with the provider beginning Aug. 23, according to the report.

Coastal Women's Healthcare said Anthem's current reimbursement rates are too low to allow it to provide the level of quality patients expect, according to the report. The provider said Anthem has not provided serious responses to its rate proposal.

In a statement to the station, an Anthem spokesperson said it has offered generous increases over the next several years, which were rejected. The spokesperson said the payer also offered a one-year extension with a "substantial increase in rates" while a longer-term deal is worked out, but that too was rejected.

Portland-based Maine Medical Center said in April it is leaving Anthem's provider network in January.  Portland-based Fore River Urology said this month it is terminating its contract with Anthem.
