The contract split applies to Humana Medicare Advantage plans, according to a statement CommonSpirit shared with Becker’s.

“As a non-profit organization, fair and responsible agreements with insurance companies allow us to keep up with the rising cost of care, treat underserved patients and continue to invest millions of dollars in our communities each year,” a spokesperson for CommonSpirit told Becker’s.

Chicago-based CommonSpirit operates 12 hospitals in Colorado.

Patients who enrolled in an MA plan during the open enrollment period can choose to switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan once through March 31, the system said.

“We deeply value our patients and want to ensure they can maintain full access to the CommonSpirit doctors and nurses they know and trust,” the spokesperson said.

Public disputes between payers and providers are becoming more common. According to data from FTI Consulting, a financial and business consulting firm, in the third quarter of 2024, there were 37 contract disputes covered by a traditional media outlet, the highest since the first quarter of 2022. Of these 37 disputes, 12 failed to reach a timely agreement.

About half of the disputes involved Medicare Advantage plans, according to FTI.

Becker’s has reached out to Humana for comment and will update this article if more information becomes available.
