Baton Rouge General strikes deal with Cigna, but Aetna impasse remains

Baton Rouge (La.) General has reached an agreement on a new contract with Cigna but remains out of network with Aetna, The Advocate reported May 9.

The health system's contract with Cigna was set to expire later in May if a new contract was not reached, according to the report. About 2,500 patients would have been affected if the sides were unable to reach an agreement by the deadline.

The system's hospitals have been out of network with Aetna since November and its physician clinics went out of network in mid-April, according to the report. About 5,000 patients have been affected by the split.

A Baton Rouge General spokesperson told The Advocate that progress has not been made in negotiations with Aetna. The sides have been at odds over reimbursement rates, and the spokesperson said the health system continues to be in open discussion with the insurer.
