5 numbers depict insured workers’ struggles to access mental healthcare

Even those with employer-sponsored health insurance struggle with accessing mental healthcare, according to a survey from the Employee Benefit Research Institute and Path Forward.

The survey encompassed over 3,100 workers with employer-sponsored health coverage. 

Here are five numbers depicting how employees and their families might struggle with mental healthcare access:

1. Twenty-seven percent of respondents noted a mental health condition for themselves or a covered family member on their plan.

2. One-third of respondents reporting a mental health condition struggled with receiving mental or behavioral healthcare.

3. Nearly one-third of those reporting a mental health condition also said they struggled with getting prescriptions, more than double the rate of someone without a mental health condition.

4. Out of the respondents documenting a condition, 62% had visited an emergency room within the six months leading up to the survey.

5. Respondents with a mental health condition were nearly twice as likely to say a doctor’s denial of health insurance was a major barrier to care.
