New Jersey has become the eighth state to require state-regulated health plans to cover abortion services.

The coverage requirement began Jan. 1 for the individual and small employer markets, with larger employers being required later in 2023, according to a Dec. 30 news release from the state’s insurance department.

The state conducted an analysis on the new policy and found that payers estimate an impact on premiums to range from zero to 0.1 percent.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 17–19 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
