Sanders’ leadership would allow him to pursue one of his most notable policy positions, Medicare for All, which he reintroduced May 12 in the Senate to create a federally-administered single-payer healthcare system.
“As chairman of the committee, he will focus on universal health care, lowering the cost of prescription drugs, increasing access to higher education, and protecting workers’ rights on the job,” a spokesperson for the Vermont senator told the newspaper.
Current chair, Democratic Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, said she will look to lead the Senate Appropriations Committee. Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana said he is aiming to be the ranking member of the Health committee.
