According to a fact sheet published Oct. 6 by CMS, the average rating across all plans for 2023 is 4.15, down from 4.37 in 2022. The average rating in 2021 was 4.06, and 4.16 in 2020.
A total of 57 Medicare Advantage contracts received five-star ratings, down from 74 in 2022. There were 67 plans in the 4.5 star category, down from 96 in 2022.
According to CMS, around 72 percent of Medicare Advantage enrollees will be in contracts with four or more stars in 2023.
The star ratings for Medicare Advantage plans with prescription drug coverage are derived from up to 38 quality measures.
According to an analysis from McKinsey, Medicare Advantage plan star ratings hit their highest-ever levels in 2022. Analysts predicted plans could experience $800 million in revenue impacts from rating changes.
