Cities with the highest Medicaid acceptance rates

Providers in the Detroit area are the most likely to accept Medicaid patients, while those in the Dallas area are the least likely, according to a new survey from staffing firms AMN Healthcare and Merritt Hawkins.

The survey was released Sept. 12 and includes data from 1,034 physician offices in 15 metropolitan areas. The average acceptance rates are based on five specialties: family medicine, cardiology, dermatology, obstetrics-gynecology and orthopedics.

The average Medicaid acceptance rate among the surveyed cities is 54 percent, up from 53 percent in 2017.

Philadelphia: 66 percent

Portland, Ore.: 64 percent

Boston: 63 percent

Los Angeles: 54 percent

Atlanta: 54 percent

Miami: 48 percent

Houston: 44 percent

Washington, D.C.: 43 percent

San Diego: 37 percent

New York: 31 percent

Dallas: 30 percent
