The company sold up to 900 limited benefit health plans that did not provide the minimum essential coverage required under the ACA. Salvasen was also not licensed to conduct business as a payer in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin Insurance Commissioner Nathan Houdek said March 22 that CMS will open a special enrollment period for Salvasen customers to enroll in a plan under the ACA. Mr. Houdek also assessed a $14,000 forfeiture against Salvasen and barred it from selling new policies or renewing existing policies in the state.
Minnesota and Nevada have also taken action against Salvasen for selling subpar health plans.
Salvasen told Wisconsin beneficiaries in December that their coverage would be terminated at the end of 2021. There were 212 active policy holders in the state at that time, according to the Examiner.
