The state’s Medicaid enrollment has increased by 7 percent since 2013, and currently nearly 1 million South Carolinians have insurance through Medicaid.
South Carolina Medicaid Director Christian Soura has asked state legislature for $1.1 billion for the 2016-17 fiscal year, a $129 million increase from the previous fiscal year, according to the report.
“Obviously, service rates and the number of people you cover are the biggest drivers of agency spending,” said Director Soura.
Governor Nikki Haley (R) hasn’t released her proposed executive budget yet, but if the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services doesn’t receive the necessary funds for Medicaid, it could reduce hospital reimbursement rates or cut back on provided services.
