WellSense Health Plan, under Boston Medical Center Health System, is restructuring teams, according to a statement shared with Becker’s Oct. 27.

“WellSense is evolving our business and operations, and recently reshaped our teams, in response to significant industry and policy changes,” the company said. “We are deeply grateful for the contributions of all colleagues who have supported our members.”

Some executive shifts have recently taken place at the organization. Emily Griese, PhD, joined WellSense as COO, according to a LinkedIn post. Earlier in October, Paul Wingle said he is no longer serving as WellSense’s chief product and sales officer, adding that the company “made some difficult calls to tighten our focus and resources on those products and segments where we had a right to win.”

“WellSense and I are both in a period of change, and I wish them the best as they chart a new course forward,” he wrote.

As of Oct. 27, Massachusetts had not published any new WARN notices from WellSense or the health system. WellSense did not respond to a Becker’s question regarding possible layoffs.

In April, Moody’s downgraded Boston Medical Center’s credit rating to “Baa3” from “Baa2,” citing WellSense’s “volatility” in part.

WellSense is among a handful of payers, including system-owned plans, backing away from Medicare Advantage plans in 2027. In 2026, the insurer offered plans in all 10 New Hampshire counties. Looking beyond WellSense, an Oct. 27 KFF analysis found that about 4.3 million Medicare beneficiaries will see their MA or standalone prescription drug plans terminated Dec. 31.

Other health insurers have been trimming or reshaping their workforces, as well. From the end of 2025 to the third quarter of 2026, Centene’s headcount dropped 11.8%. Humana has also cut an undisclosed number of jobs as “opportunities are created in areas that support [its] future direction,” the insurer told Becker’s.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 2–3 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
